The critics’ main argument, however, is that having women in a combat unit would undermine a unit’s cohesion and disrupt its esprit de corps — not necessarily because of anything the women would do but because of how the men might react, such as feeling more protective toward women soldiers and being less able to focus on the mission. But that would be a failing of the men, not the women.
